Whats The Prevalence Of Weed Use In Pregnancy
Weed is the most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy. Studies have tried to estimate the exact number of pregnant women who use weed, but results vary.
According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists , 2 to 5 percent of women use weed during pregnancy. This number goes up for certain groups of women. For example, young, urban, and socioeconomically disadvantaged women report higher rates of use that reach up to 28 percent.
How Might This Cross
It might be that the developing eggs within a fetus are sensitive to the chemicals involved in smoking tobacco and that, later in life, the damage is still present and may eventually affect offspring.
In terms of mechanisms, there are two broad possibilities. There is DNA damage that is transmitted to the grandchildren, or there is some adaptive response to the smoking that leaves the grandchild more vulnerable to ASD.
Prof. Marcus Pembrey, co-author
It could be that this damage is carried down in mitochondria, the so-called powerhouses of the cell. Mitochondria are only passed down to the next generation via the mothers egg. Prof. Pembrey believes that it is possible that small changes in a womans mitochondria might not affect her, but their influence could be amplified in the following generation.
As for why granddaughters rather than grandsons are affected, the jury is out. Prof. Pembrey says that: We have no explanation for the sex difference, although we have previously found that grandmaternal smoking is associated with different growth patterns in grandsons and granddaughters.
The upshot of this study is the repetition of some sound advice do not smoke during pregnancy. As Prof. Golding says: We already know that protecting a baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things a woman can do to give her child a healthy start in life. Now weve found that not smoking during pregnancy could also give their future grandchildren a better start too.

Endogenous Opiate Precursor Theory
In 1979, Jaak Panksepp proposed a connection between autism and opiates, noting that injections of minute quantities of opiates in young laboratory animals induce symptoms similar to those observed among autistic children. The possibility of a relationship between autism and the consumption of gluten and casein was first articulated by Kalle Reichelt in 1991.
Opiate theory hypothesizes that autism is the result of a metabolic disorder in which opioid peptides gliadorphin and casomorphin, produced through metabolism of gluten and casein , pass through an abnormally permeable intestinal wall and then proceed to exert an effect on neurotransmission through binding with opioid receptors. It has been postulated that the resulting excess of opioids affects brain maturation, and causes autistic symptoms, including behavioural difficulties, attention problems, and alterations in communicative capacity and social and cognitive functioning.
Does Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Cause Autism
No. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder are two separate disorders.
The diseases present with similar symptoms. Both are developmental disorders impacting the brain and social interactions. Some adoptive parents report a misdiagnosis of ASD before getting an accurate FASD diagnosis.
Here are some key differences:
|Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder|
|Difficulties may begin after a period of normal growth|
|Echolalia and ritualistic behaviors not common||Echolalia and ritualistic behaviors are common|
|Occurs as often in males as in females||Occurs in males 4 times as often as in females|
|Caused by drinking during pregnancy||Cause is unknown, though likely involve genes|

If Your Grandmother Smoked You May Be More Likely To Develop Autism
A recent study, published in Scientific Reports, concludes that if a girls maternal grandmother smoked tobacco during her pregnancy, she is significantly more likely to develop autistic traits.
Autism, characterized by repetitive behaviors and difficulty interacting socially, appears to be on the rise.
Much of this increase is thought to be due to better detection rates and greater awareness. However, many scientists believe that environmental or lifestyle factors might also play a role.
A recent study, carried out by researchers from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, looked into three generations of data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children , a long-term data collection project carried out by the University that began in the early 1990s.
The researchers recruited expectant mothers and took in-depth information about their lifestyle, habits, and health including whether or not they smoked. They have been followed up regularly since the project first began.
have not .
Thanks to the unique ALSPAC cohort, the researchers for the current study could delve even deeper. They wanted to understand whether there are any measurable effects of smoking while pregnant on a persons eventual grandchildren.
In all, 14,500 participants were involved in the study. Once the data had been thoroughly perused and myriad factors controlled for, the results were surprising.
Can Drug Use Cause Autism
There is no medication or illegal drug taken before or during pregnancy that in itself causes babies to be born with ASD.
Certain genes are likely required for ASD and are triggered by various environmental factors that raise the risk of developing ASD.
As an example of environmental factors, the risk of ASD is higher for children with older parents, as well as those with mothers in worse general health before pregnancy. In fact, a womans age and health seems to play a more critical role than the drugs she takes.

How Much Alcohol Is Safe During Pregnancy
While friends may downplay the risks, citing cases of drinking that didnt lead to issues for the child, there is no known safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
- If you cant go without occasional drinking, therapy will help you uncover why.
- If you feel physically sick when you try to stop drinking, please seek medical detox at a facility like JourneyPure or at a hospital. Alcohol withdrawal can be deadly even without pregnancy complications.

Does Paternal Drug Use Cause Autism
No. There is no current evidence linking a fathers drug or medication use prior conception to any increased risk of ASD.
However, paternal drug use can cause negative impacts. One study tested on rats links cocaine use at the time of conception with learning disabilities and memory loss, but only in sons .
More research on the impact of paternal drug use is needed, especially since a fathers age is known to increase the risk of ASD too.
However, if paternal drug use was the cause of ASD, researchers would have discovered that by now. The answer is just not that simple. Most cases of ASD do not involve paternal drug or medication use at all.

Breastfeeding And Marijuana Use
It has been proven that THC, the main ingredient in marijuana that causes its effects, can be passed from a mother to a child through breastfeeding, as a mother who smokes marijuana will have the chemical present in her breast milk. While there arent many studies on this fact, there is some evidence of the association between marijuana use in mothers who breastfeed and motor development in their children .
Is Cannabis Use Safe During Pregnancy
There is currently no known direct cause of autism. Instead, its development seems to be dependent on several risk factors.
First and foremost, autism generally runs in families. There are isolated genes that carry more risk than others and high-functioning tendencies can be carried through the generations. Furthermore, sometimes genetic changes can occur in-utero that also increase the chance of developing autism.
Secondly, in addition to those who are genetically vulnerable to the disorder, there are a number of environmental factors that can contribute to its development. Complications during pregnancy or birth, advanced age of the parents, and the multiple pregnancies spaced one year apart are some examples.
Swedish statistician and epidemiologist, Sven Sandin says that despite the validity of the study, there are other risk factors that could explain the results.
“â¦Autism is highly heritable. Could it therefore be that they transfer the risk to their childrenâ¦just through passing on their genes?”Sven Sandin â Karolinska Institute
More research is needed to focus on the parameters of cannabis use. When this occurs, then a more formative conclusion can be reached. In the meantime, it’s important that citizens are educated on the risks of cannabis use during pregnancy.

Does Using Marijuana Affect Breastfeeding
- Chemicals from marijuana can be passed to your baby through breast milk. THC is stored in fat and is slowly released over time, meaning your baby could still be exposed even after you stop using marijuana.
- However, data on the effects of marijuana exposure to your baby through breastfeeding are limited and conflicting. To limit potential risk to the infant, breastfeeding mothers should avoid marijuana use.11, 1416

Reducing Risk Of Autism During Pregnancy And Birth
Based on the research, there are several steps a birth parent can take to reduce the risk that their child will have autism. They include:
- Having children after the age of 21 and before the age of 35 and choosing a male genetic parent in the same age range
- Working with a doctor to choose safer medications for specific issues, such as epilepsy
- Avoiding activities such as smoking or being around known toxins
- Making regular prenatal visits to the doctor and following up on any potential physical issues, such as emerging gestational diabetes
- Closely following any medical advice regarding bed rest and stress avoidance
According to studies, your baby may also benefit from consistent and appropriate use of specific supplements. Taking supplements such as folate , omega-3s, and vitamin D3, correcting vitamin deficiencies, boosting your immune system, and prolonging breastfeeding are all mentioned in research findings as possible ways to reduce the risk of autism .

Smoking During Pregnancy May Increase Autism Risk In Children
Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have children with high-functioning autism, a new study suggests.
“It has long been known that autism is an umbrella term for a wide range of disorders that impair social and communication skills,” lead researcher Professor Amy Kalkbrenner from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health said in a statement released on Thursday.
What we are seeing is that some disorders on the autism spectrum, more than others, may be influenced by a factor such as whether a mother smokes during pregnancy, she added.
Kalkbrenner and her research team analyzed a population-based study that compared smoking data from birth certificates of 633,989 children, born in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 from 11 different states.
The findings reveal that 13 percent of the mothers of children included in the study had smoked during pregnancy and that 11 percent of the 3,315 children that were identified as having an autism spectrum disorder at age eight, had mothers who had smoked during pregnancy.
Researchers also found that these children were more likely to have less severe high-functioning autism, like Aspergers Disorder.
“The study doesn’t say for certain that smoking is a risk factor for autism,” Kalkbrenner said. “But it does say that if there is an association, it’s between smoking and certain types of autism.”
Taking Tylenol During Pregnancy
Use of Tylenol during pregnancy is very common as it is one of the only pain relievers considered safe during pregnancy. However, there is a growing concern that it may be linked to increased risks for the child, including for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder .
Birth cohort studies in Spain and Denmark found an association between Tylenol use during pregnancy and autism in the child. One smaller study of the umbilical cord blood of children who were later diagnosed with autism or ADHD found that those with more acetaminophen in their pre-birth blood supply were more likely to develop the disorders.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does not recommend any changes in how physicians prescribe acetaminophen at this time until more definitive research is done.

How To Reduce The Risk Of Autism
A higher risk of having a child on the autism spectrum is associated with several pregnancy-related issues. Some of these, such as the use of certain pharmaceuticals during pregnancy, can be managed to reduce the risk. Others, however, are difficult, if not impossible, to change.
Its important to remember that an association is not the same thing as a cause. For example, it’s a fact that preterm babies are more likely to have autism than full-term babies, but it’s not known exactly why. The reasons may actually relate more to genetics or to socioeconomic factors than to the behaviors of the birth parent.
This article will discuss the pregnancy-related risk factors for autism, with a look at which factors are supported by the most evidence, which have weaker associations, and what you can do to reduce the risk.

Subgroup And Sensitivity Analyses And Moderator Analysis With Meta
To identify potential causes of the high heterogeneity in our main analysis, we performed subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Subgroup analyses were stratified by study design, location, sample size, quality, adjustment for confounders, maternal smoking assessment, and ASD status ascertainment . Maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with significantly elevated risk of ASD in European populations and in the single study conducted in Asia , but not in North American populations . Maternal smoking was also associated with elevated ASD risk in studies with the lowest quartile of sample sizes . Subgroup analyses by study design, study quality, and adjustment for confounders showed no significant differences in pooled ORs across strata. Assessment of maternal smoking at a prenatal visit or after birth showed significant associations with ASD in offspring, whereas assessment at birth had an apparent protective effect . For the sensitivity analysis, the pooled ORs varied moderately, ranging from 1.08 when Gao et al. was excluded to 1.17 when Bilder et al. was excluded. Case deletion diagnostics identified Talbott et al. as a potential outlier. The main meta-analysis without Talbott et al. resulted in a similar pooled OR as the original analysis .

Growing Number Of Pregnant Women Using Marijuana
We know that cannabinoids can cross placental tissue and enter the fetal bloodstream, Corsi said. There are cannabinoid receptors present in the developing fetus and exposure to cannabis may impact the wiring of the developing brain.
While its known that substance use in pregnant women can affect a fetuss neurodevelopment, the question of whether cannabis use is a risk factor for autism has not been thoroughly investigated, Daniele Fallin, director of the Wendy Klag Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in an email.
Fallin, who was not involved with the new research, said that the observational study cannot prove that cannabis use by pregnant women causes autism. This is an interesting first step, but much more work is needed to implicate maternal cannabis use specifically in autism risk, she added.
To take a closer look at possible neurodevelopmental impacts of cannabis on developing fetuses, Corsi and his colleagues reviewed data from all Ontario births that occurred from 2007 to 2012, which was before the drug was legalized in Canada. Their final analysis included 503,065 children, 3,148 of whom had mothers who used cannabis while pregnant.
When the researchers accounted for factors that might skew their results, they found that the risk of autism was increased by 50 percent when mothers used cannabis during pregnancy.
