Great Tv Characters Who Are On The Spectrum

ByJason Wieselast updated 06 August 2020

These days, the entertainment industry seems to be more diverse than ever and, by proxy, working to include better examples of cultural representation in movies, literature, but especially on television. This also includes those who are on the autistic spectrum, which many TV characters, from today or yesteryear alike, serve as an admirable reflection of.

It should be noted that some of the most often discussed characters in reference to autism in various works of fiction are merely implied to be on the spectrum. These names have included Boo Radley in Harper Lees novel To Kill a Mockingbird, both Jim Parsons Sheldon Cooper and Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah-Fowler on CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and even Ryan Goslings nameless hero, otherwise referred to as Driver in director Nicolas Winding Refns 2011 Neo-noir thriller Drive.

For this list, however, we want to focus specifically on characters, and, in particularly, those who come from television, whose diagnosis is confirmed and also important to their role on the series they originate from. Of those many beloved and revealing characters, we narrowed down this list to just seven of our favorites.

It happens at least once every episode: A scene in Parenthood carefully crafted to make you cry.

Like the moment when devoted parents Adam and Kristina Braverman try to console their son Max who has Asperger’s syndrome after a school camping trip goes bad.

“Why do all the other kids hate me?” Max Braverman asks, voice wavering, just before telling his disbelieving parents a classmate relieved himself in his canteen during the trip. “Asperger’s is supposed to make me smart. But if I’m smart then why … why don’t I get why they’re laughing at me?”

That’s a prime example of the heart-tugging moments that fuel Parenthood, one of broadcast TV’s last family dramas. It airs its final episode Thursday, Jan. 29, wrapping up six seasons spent documenting the laughter and tears which bind a sprawling extended family in California.

Max Burkholder plays Max Braverman, whose struggles with autism have become a major storyline on Parenthood.

‘parenthood’ Star Burkholder Sheds Light On Autism

NEW YORK Max Burkholder strives to be a normal teen while working on the NBC drama “Parenthood.”

The 16-year-old actor attends school when he’s not filming the show, which airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. EDT, about the ups and downs of a large family living in Berkley, Calif.

Burkholder’s character, also named Max, isn’t your typical teen. He has Asperger syndrome, a mild form of autism.

Burkholder says he was 10 or 11 years old when he got the part, and he didn’t know about Asperger’s.

“In the beginning … I would meet with a doctor who specializes in working with children with Asperger’s as well as the director of the next episode and we’d talk about what Max should be doing, how he’d react in certain situations, things like that,” Burkholder said in an recent interview.

“Parenthood” is now in its fifth season. Burkholder says he feels more comfortable with the character and receives guidance less frequently.

“I sort of feel that I’ve figured out how Max specifically acts rather than how a person with Asperger’s would generally act.”

Burkholder’s character is extremely intelligent. He rarely looks others in the eye or displays emotion, unless it is frustration. He is blunt and matter of fact in his speaking, but his observations can be funny even cringe-worthy, because they are so honest and unrestrained.

Monica Potter, who plays his mother, says she marvels at working with Burkholder.

Asner says that portrayal is spot on.
