What Data Sources Were Used To Collect Data
NASS data are collected from a variety of sources, namely from education, social services and health sectors. The data source for each PT was identified through the environmental scans conducted from 2011 to 2015. Figure 2 identifies the PT ASD data sources from the participating regions for NASS.

Figure 2 illustrates the data sources of each of the 13 provinces and territories using a doughnut figure that has been colour coded to represent sources for each location. Five provinces use education data including: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Yukon. Quebec uses Health Services data. British Columbia uses social services data. Prince Edward Island uses all data sources combined. The six remaining provinces and territories are under review for their data sources including: Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

When Drew Harrison was in prison, just sitting in his cell overloaded his senses. To dim the fluorescent lights, he covered the bulbs with toothpaste or paper. To mask overwhelming odors, he wrapped his uniform around his head.
Once, when he asked to stay longer in the prison yard, Harrison, who has autism, said he was told he was being insubordinate and was put in restrictive housing. Another time, he said he requested placement in solitary confinement so he wouldnt have to interact with people, which he found stressful.
After two and a half years, Harrison, who had been convicted of sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend, thought he would get out more than a month early from Greensville Correction Center in Virginia, because of good behavior. But because he had failed to sign up for a job while incarcerated earlier at another Virginia prison, he had forfeited his chance at early release, according to documentation from the Virginia Department of Corrections.
The prison environmentwith its loud, unpredictable noises, bright lights, unpleasant odors, complicated social dynamics and often byzantine bureaucracywould be difficult for anyone to navigate, but experts say that its particularly challenging for autistic people and people with similar disabilities.

Is Autism An Epidemic
Before discussing whether these numbers suggest an epidemic, its necessary to understand why autism statistics have increased. An epidemic is a spike in the rate of new cases. However, its unclear whether the prevalence of autism has really increased or if its just an increase in diagnoses.

The Mortality Rate Is Twice Higher In Autistic People
Autism prognosis statistics from a growing body of evidence have found that the mortality rate of autistic people is higher than that of the general population. To be more precise, it is double the rate. As for the autism suicide rate, statistics have reported that it is three times higher than that of the general population.
Autism Among Children In The United States
In an effort to track the number and characteristics of children in the U.S. with autism, the CDC established the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network in 2000. The network collects data from 11 sites throughout the country in order to better understand the impact of ASD in different communities.
The 11 surveillance areas vary in their data set. For example, Arkansass site consists of all 75 counties in the state, whereas Marylands site is just one county in the Baltimore metro area.
Data published in the most recent ADDM Network report, which was released in March 2020, revealed significant shifts and differences in ASD diagnoses and prevalence around the country. Overall, ASD estimates increased significantly across the country, with some sites exhibiting much higher rates of autism than others.
In 2016, the prevalence of ASD among 8-year-old children living across the 11 sites was as follows:
- Arizona: 1.6%
- Tennessee: 1.6%
- Wisconsin: 1.7%
Researchers from the ADDM Network are still gathering information to better understand why prevalence rates vary so much between sites.
While there was no overall difference in autism prevalence among black and white children, there were disparities in early diagnoses and interventions for black children. On average, black and Hispanic children received initial evaluations and diagnoses later than white children, as well as more delayed opportunities for early intervention services.

Many companies now actively hire people with autism. The software giant SAP has established itself as a leader in incorporating people with autism into the workforce. What Explains Pitch And Autism
Researchers have used two theories to explain why people with autism may have superior pitch or other perceptual abilities. According to “weak central coherence theory,” people with autism have a heightened ability to perceive details but struggle to compile information together into a larger whole.1, 12 Perfect pitch may be an “extreme and rare example” of this “piecemeal information processing,” a tendency of people with autism to focus on parts a single tone, in this instance rather than the whole.8
Another theory, called “enhanced perceptual functioning,” suggests that parts of the brain involved in sensory perception are overdeveloped, and take precedence over other brain processes in autism.1, 13
One study of musicians showed that those with perfect pitch had an asymmetry to their brain’s planum temporale, which is part of an area known for language function.14 This structural difference led to other research into musicians with perfect pitch. For instance, are they more likely to have some characteristics found in autism?
A Danish study of musicians, however, did not find piecemeal information processing in those with perfect pitch. The musicians had more problems with imagination and shifting attention similar to people with autism but their social and communication scores were typical.15
Music is important to the autism community: it empowers students and helps her “non-verbal clients to be valued in a speaking world as abled beings,”19 she explained.

Clinical Development And Diagnoses
Leo Kannerearly infantile autism
The word autism first took its modern sense in 1938 when Hans Asperger of the Vienna University Hospital adopted Bleuler’s terminology autistic psychopaths in a lecture in German about child psychology. Asperger was investigating an ASD now known as Asperger syndrome, though for various reasons it was not widely recognized as a separate diagnosis until 1981.Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital first used autism in its modern sense in English when he introduced the label early infantile autism in a 1943 report of 11 children with striking behavioral similarities. Almost all the characteristics described in Kanner’s first paper on the subject, notably “autistic aloneness” and “insistence on sameness”, are still regarded as typical of the autistic spectrum of disorders. It is not known whether Kanner derived the term independently of Asperger.
Kanner’s reuse of autism led to decades of confused terminology like infantile schizophrenia, and child psychiatry’s focus on maternal deprivation led to misconceptions of autism as an infant’s response to “refrigerator mothers“. Starting in the late 1960s autism was established as a separate syndrome.
Age At First Evaluation And Asd Diagnosis
Among 3,981 children aged 8 years with ASD who were born in the state of residence, 44% were evaluated by age 36 months, with wide variation across ADDM Network sites . The median age at first evaluation ranged from 29 months to 46 months . A higher percentage of girls was evaluated by age 36 months than boys . The majority of children with ASD and IQ 70 were evaluated by age 36 months, compared with 38% of children with IQ > 70. The percentage of children with ASD evaluated by age 36 months varied by race and ethnicity: 45% among white children, 43% among Hispanic children, and 40% among black children.
Of the 5,108 children with ASD, 3,764 had an evaluation containing a statement of a clinical ASD diagnosis. Among those 3,764 children, the median age at ASD diagnosis was 51 months . Children with ASD and IQ 70 had a median age at diagnosis of 44 months, whereas children with IQ > 70 had a median age at diagnosis of 57 months. Among children with ASD and IQ 70, black children had an older median age at diagnosis than white children . The cumulative incidence of ASD diagnoses indicates that community providers in New Jersey diagnosed more ASD cases by age 3 years than any other ADDM Network site, although the median age at diagnosis in New Jersey was the same as that of the overall ADDM Network . The overall cumulative incidence of ASD diagnoses was 13.2 per 1,000 children by the time they turned age 8 years.

Potential Explanations For The Rising Prevalence Of Autism
ASD was first introduced as a category for receiving special education in the United States in 1991. The gradual adoption and use of this reporting category by school districts has led to a gradual increase in the number of children identified with autism in school settings. Children with autism, who might have been served under the intellectual disability category or another disability category in the past, are increasingly being served under the autism category, a process referred to as diagnostic substitution . Evidence of diagnostic substitution of autism for ID can be seen in the special education data shown in . Additional evidence of this can be seen in epidemiologic data for 8-year-old children in metropolitan Atlanta, which showed a decline in ID without co-occurring ASD between 1996 and 2010 and also showed corresponding increases in ASD during the same period . shows this relationship.

A recent study from Sweden provides some evidence that the rise over time in autism diagnoses in that country among children born between 1993 and 2002 was steeper than the increase observed during the same period in the frequency of autism behavioral characteristics reported in telephone surveys of parents . The authors concluded that the increase in autism diagnoses could not be fully explained by the corresponding increase in reported autism behavioral characteristics in the population.
How Many Children And Youth Were Identified With Asd In 2015
A combined prevalence of 1 in 66 children and youth 517 years of age were diagnosed with ASD in 2015 across the seven participating PTs . The number of children and youth with ASD varied between PTs, from 1 in 126 in the Yukon to 1 in 57 in Newfoundland and Labrador.
