Autism Awareness And Acceptance Month
During the entire month of April, you will hear about autism-oriented fundraisers, autism awareness presentations, autism-friendly happenings, and special opportunities to recognize people on the autism spectrum. You will also notice that most people involved with these activities are wearing the color blue. In fact, you might even notice buildings lighting it up blue on April 2.
April is World Autism Month, an annual opportunity for a dedicated conversation about autism spectrum disorder. Autism touches more than 70 million people globally. The month of April is a special moment to inform the public and increase awareness regarding autism and other disorders on the autism spectrum. It also represents an opportunity to overcome prejudices, which are the main obstacle to the integration of those people in the community.
The first National Autism Awareness Month was held by the Autism Society in April 1970. Nearly a quarter-century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion, and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with autism spectrum disorder is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
Different responses to Autism Awareness Day and Month come about as a result of the history of the events, the intent behind the events, and the people who created them.
Find Ways To Teach Children Life Skills
Learning how to take care of their own basic needs can help children with autism socially and can also help make their daily routine more predictable. Parents, teachers, and caregivers should work together to determine which life skills a child with autism should learn first and which methods would be best to teach those skills. Using the same methods to practice the same skills at home and in the classroom can help to make learning easier.
Autism Awareness Month Has Traditionally Been Fullof Slacktivism
A while ago I wrote an article called How to raise ACTUAL autism awareness, and I often give talks about this exact subject. One of the points it makes is about how raising awareness can now be as easy as changing your profile picture, whilst not making any kind of practical changes.
I mean, why donate actualmoney to an autism-friendly charity when you can put I love someone withautism on your Facebook picture completely for free?
Then of course, theresthis kind of crap right here.
Rather curiously, I get the same word-for-word message for Cancer Awareness Month too. Leaving aside that it doesnt specify which cancer it seeks to raise awareness of , does anyone else think its utterly abhorrent to have all my bras are missing as part of a cancer awareness game?
Thankfully, due to the deluge of copy-paste messages weve all been doing during the coronavirus lockdown, this is the first year in a while that Ive not had this game sent to me.
The basic concept is thatyou post one of these sentences as your status, wait for someone to take youliterally , and thensend them this copy-pasted message asking for them to join in, to raiseawareness of the condition that made them gullible enough to fall for it. Orsomething like that.
Again, theres noexplanation for what awareness this is raising, or how it aims to change thelives of autistic people .

Help Children Interact With Others
Children who have autism struggle with knowing what to do and how to act in social situations. Instead of learning by observation, children with autism have to learn techniques to help them interact with their peers and others. One popular way to teach children social techniques is to use stories to help them remember what they should do or say in different situations. Creating social stories or scripts can help children overcome the struggles they have in social situations.

What is World Autism Day?
Every year since 2008, United Nations member states have been encouraged to observe World Autism Awareness Day in order to raise awareness of autism and aspergers syndrome around the world.
Buildings, homes and communities come together on April 2 in recognition of people with autism and those who love and support them.
Autism-friendly events and educational activities also usually take place throughout April, as part of World Autism Awareness Month.
These aim to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, alongside encouraging worldwide support and a kinder, more inclusive world.
What is autism?
The National Autistic Society explains that, Autism is a lifelong disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world. There are approximately 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK.
Autism is a spectrum condition. All autistic people share certain difficulties, but being autistic will affect them in different ways.
Some autistic people also have learning disabilities, mental health issues or other conditions, meaning people need different levels of support. All people on the autism spectrum learn and develop.

Repeat Or Reword Instructions And Questions
If a child with autism is focused on something else, try to get their attention before you ask them a question or give them instructions. If they dont hear what you say or look confused, try repeating it or rewording it in a different way to help them better understand what you are trying to communicate.

Dont Speak Over Autistics
If you arent autistic, you dont know what its like to be autistic. It doesnt matter who you know has it or what education youve had. Its important to listen to autistic voices, thoughts and experiences when it comes to anything that pertains to autism. We tend to be experts on our own bodies and minds. This includes topics like ABA therapy, Autism Speaks, hiring #ActuallyAutistic actors, identity-first language, and many more. Nothing about us without us.
Ways You Can Become Involved At The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention Autism Website
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the “CDC is committed to continuing to provide essential data on ASD, search for factors that put children at risk for ASD and possible causes, and develop resources that help identify children with ASD as early as possible.” You can visit the website and education yourself about the following:
- Early Intervention: From birth to 5 years, your child should reach milestones in how he plays, learns, speaks, acts and moves. Track your childs development and act early if you have a concern.
- Vaccine Safety: Some people have had concerns that ASD might be linked to the vaccines children receive, but studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing ASD.

Autism Awareness Month Has Traditionally Played Apart In The Demonising Of Autistic People
Heres the big one. And ithas devastating consequences.
The moment we realised that the coronavirus may be a threat to our health services ability to function, disability groups started to get nervous. Because the closer we would get to being overwhelmed by COVID-19, the bigger the fear that disabled people would be asked to lay down their lives for everyone else.
Its thankfully not common practice, but on rare occasions its been seen happening: reports are coming in from multiple countries about doctors contacting parents of autistic people, asking them to sign Do Not Resuscitate orders, presumably so that their children wont have to occupy a hospital bed that could otherwise be used by a non-autistic patient.
This month the NHS and their counterparts worldwide are under enormous pressure and are rightly being celebrated, although sadly even before this month they have had to spread the word that learning disabilities are not reasons to issue DNR orders, for fear of the occasional medical professional recommending them for healthy autistic people with learning difficulties, on the basis of their autism rather than their health.
Yes, its utterly horrifying and it casts the rest of the healthcare profession in an unfairly bad light. And it is a direct consequence of several decades worth of negative advocacy.
This isnt the first time Ive used this picture from Autism Times Two. Its rare I see a sentence that encapsulates an issue to such pitch-perfection.

Celebrate Your Teachers And Therapists
During the month of April, you and your child with autism can help celebrate Autism Awareness Month by doing something special for the educators and therapists involved in your childs life. Simple gifts like a plate of homemade cookies, a thank-you note, or a homemade card from your child would be a wonderful way for you to thank your childs teacher, speech therapist, school principal, occupational therapist, etc.
Autism Awareness Month Becomes Autism Acceptance Month
The Autism Society of America isnt the first autism organization to push for a rebranding of AAM. The Autistic Self-Advocacy Network has called April Autism Acceptance Month since 2011, saying: Acceptance of autism as a natural condition in the human experience is necessary for real dialogue to occur. Other groups, such as the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, Autistic Women and Non-Binary Network, National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities , and more, also use Autism Acceptance Month over Autism Awareness Month.
In March 2021, the Autism Society of America urged the media to use the new language in their coverage. Christopher Banks, President and CEO of the Autism Society, said: While we will always work to spread awareness, words matter as we strive for autistic individuals to live fully in all areas of life. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system.
Ultimately, the goal of Autism Acceptance Month is to be more inclusive of the very community it seeks to celebrate. It promotes not just education about the differences of people with autism, but understanding and respecting those differences. It calls for more tangible progress toward equal rights and resources.

In the course of time I had the privilege of working with other autistic children and adults. Each taught me something of wit and intellect and patience and goodness. From M who would patiently stare me in the eye until I got the so-subtle joke he was willing me to catch on to , to C who had my mind racing to keep pace with her busy busy hands and fast-as-lightning feet, and right back to Amir.
Amir, who is a man now. Just a few years older than my oldest son. No doubt having won the hearts of many professionals and teachers and fellow students alike. Heres to the ones you love who know the many challenges and hopes of Autism. May they swim so free.
Provide An Appropriate Physical Environment
If children are hypersensitive or hyposensitive , its important for you to make sure they do not go into sensory overload:
- Use indirect lighting or a softer overhead lighting
- Make sure the noise level in the environment is not too loud
- Use calming textures and mild, natural scents
Its also important to have a quiet place for children with autism to go to if the noise level at home or in the classroom becomes so loud that they are unable to function. Be sure to prepare children for any unavoidable noises, such as a vacuum or an announcement on the school speaker system, by giving them headphones or distracting them in another way.

Autism Awareness Month: Spectrum360 Helps Individuals Live A Full Life
5 minute read
For Nick Purcell, one of the secrets of his success is simple he’s never been late for anything in his life.
“I always make sure I have enough time to do everything I need to do to get there on time,” he said. “The night before, I always make sure to get eight hours of sleep, so I am not tired.”
Making sure he’s punctual isn’t the only thing he likes to plan in his life. At all his jobs, he’s had a task list to make sure he completes everything for the day and more. Most importantly, Nick has a five-year plan to achieve his ambitions of getting an office job, marrying his girlfriend, buying a house in his hometown of Bloomfield, New Jersey and getting a hybrid car.
What wasn’t in his plans was a disruption in working due to COVID-19, but he used the time to help improve his skills and continue working with Spectrum360, a North New Jersey-based organization that serves individuals on the autism spectrum. Nick has been a long-time client with the organization’s Independence360, a comprehensive program developing vocational, life and social skills and personal development for adults diagnosed with autism.
Independence360 has been working with clients virtually by hosting both one-on-one sessions and classes to help keep up their continued progress as they wait for the economy to reopen.
Even though the pandemic threw a wrench in his plans, he didn’t let it get him down. Instead, he focused on becoming a master at Microsoft Office.

Autism Speaks And Autism Awareness/ Acceptance
In 2005, Autism Speaks was founded. It is created and funded by the extremely wealthy and influential Bob and Suzanne Wright who have a grandson on the autism spectrum, the organization quickly became the major autism-related non-profit in the world. With their strong connections, the Wrights were able to create very high profile autism awareness programs, including:
- World Autism Awareness Day which is adopted by the United Nations in 2007
- Light It Up Blue, an international effort to light iconic buildings in blue to raise awareness of autism
- The Power of One March, which takes place annually on April 2
Autism Speaks sells blue T-shirts, provides resources to groups interested in fundraising or running autism-related programs, and also promotes fundraising marches and events during the month of April. Institutions ranging from museums and zoos to libraries, schools, and even businesses run special events during that period.
Use Clear And Concise Language
Children with autism interpret language literally, so the use of idioms, metaphors, allusions, or sarcasm in language makes them confused and more likely to misinterpret what you actually mean. Try to be as simple and direct as you can when speaking to children with autism, especially when you are asking them a question or giving them instructions.
