Agreements And Disagreements With Other Studies Or Reviews

My 2-YEAR JOURNEY With Wellbutrin/Buproprion For ADHD & Depression: The Pros & Cons

Two previous systematic reviews have assessed the effects of bupropion for adult ADHD. Faraone 2010 estimated effect sizes of different medications for adult ADHD. They included doubleblinded, placebocontrolled studies of ADHD in adults that presented the means and SDs of either change or endpoint scores for intervention and placebo groups. Out of 18 records, they found three studies that evaluated bupropion versus placebo . Whilst they did not provide an estimate of effects for the thee studies of bupropion, they estimated the number needed to treat for an additional beneficial outcome to be approximately 4.5 for bupropion.

Maneeton 2011 aimed to systematically review the efficacy, acceptability, and tolerability of bupropion compared to placebo for adults with ADHD. They included five trials also included in our review and reached similar conclusions. There are some differences between their review and ours in the way that results are included in the analysis. For example, we set higher standards for methodological quality, concluding that for most items reporting was incomplete to make a robust assessment, whereas Maneeton 2011 judged all studies to be at low risk of bias. The authors concluded that evidence suggests that bupropion is effective and safe for adults with ADHD. Although the conclusions are similar to our review, their review lacks any caution with respect to their conclusion due to small studies sizes and poor reporting of study quality.

Medication Chart To Treat Attention Deficit Disorders

Why Your Doctor May Prefer Wellbutrin To Adderall

A doctor may recommend Wellbutrin to treat ADHD symptoms if:

  • You cant tolerate the side effects of stimulant drugs
  • Adderall or other stimulant drugs have not been effective in managing your symptoms
  • You have a substance abuse disorder or history of addiction
  • You have an addiction to nicotine
  • You also have other mental health disorders, like depression, along with ADHD

The symptoms above are not an exhaustive list of potential side effects.

If something doesnt feel right, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Is There Research To Support Using Wellbutrin For Adhd

There have been several small, randomized clinical trials completed to test how well Wellbutrin works to treat ADHD. All of these studies were done in adults.

In these trials, which included a total of more than 400 people, long-acting forms of Wellbutrin resulted in clinically significant improvements in the symptoms of ADHD. It was also shown to be safe compared to a placebo.

Dr. Chatigny says brand drugs like Strattera and Wellbutrin are OK options for treating ADHD.

Non-stimulant medications like these and others dont have abuse potential. However, the downside is they typically take longer to work, she says. Amphetamines like Adderall begin to work within 30 minutes to an hour. Non-stimulants like Strattera can take 4 to 8 weeks to reach maximum effectiveness at the proper dose.

Dr. Chatigny prefers a non-stimulant treatment regime for patients with ADHD, especially in adults, because central nervous stimulants like Adderall are controlled substances, meaning theyre regulated by the federal government because they have a high potential for abuse, addiction and physical dependence.

As always, talk to your doctor about Adderall, ADHD, and other medications.

Which Is Right For You

When comparing Wellbutrin to Adderall for ADHD, Adderall is the clear winner for most people. If you have ADHD and have not tried either medication, you will generally first be put on a stimulant. The exception is if you have known heart problems, where the doctor will need to more carefully weigh the risks and benefits.

When stimulants are not a good choice for you, or they have proven in some way ineffective, you will then usually be put on nonstimulants. While the name might imply antidepressants fall under this umbrella, nonstimulants refer to a few FDA-approved drugs that are proven to help with ADHD symptoms. They are generally less effective than stimulants but can be a good alternative choice for some people.

Antidepressants are not FDA-approved to treat ADHD. There is still more research that should be done. The existing research suggests drugs like Wellbutrin are simply not as effective as the alternatives in the majority of cases. This is not to say this option is wrong for every patient. Some patients may need an alternative to the FDA-approved options for a variety of legitimate reasons.

All things being equal, it is likely you will want to try Adderall before Wellbutrin. The only exception will be those who have already tried the alternatives or whose doctors decide that traditional treatments pose too much risk.

Wellbutrin Vs Adderall: Differences And Similarities

Medically reviewed by Katelyn Hagerty, FNP

Anxiety and depression are two common mental conditions its estimated that about 40 million adults deal with anxiety and an estimated 21 million U.S. adults have depression.

Meanwhile, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders that affects children, and it can last well into adulthood. In 2020, ADHD affected over 360 million adults globally.

If youre one of the many people who has been diagnosed with one of these conditions, you might wonder about the different treatments for each and whether or not any types of treatment can be used for both.

Wellbutrin and Adderall are two common prescription medications used by healthcare providers to treat anxiety and depressive disorders and ADHD, respectively. But can you use either medication for both conditions?

While there are similarities between these two medications, there are also important differences to know. We go into more detail on everything you need to know about Wellbutrin vs Adderall.

Wellbutrin Vs Adderall: Whats The Difference

Wellbutrin and Adderall review

ADHD affects nearly 4% of adults and 8% of children in the United States.

Adderall is one of the medications of choice for managing the symptoms of ADHD.

However, its not the only medication that is prescribed.

In some cases, patients may not tolerate the stimulant drug and are recommended another medication, like Wellbutrin.

While Wellbutrin is primarily used as a treatment option for depression, it is sometimes recommended to treat some cases of ADHD.

In this article, Ill explain what Wellbutrin is, how it works, and what its used to treat.

Ill talk about how Adderall works and what its used to treat.

Ill then explain the differences between these two medications, especially as it relates to ADHD.

Ill outline some precautions for both medications, and tell you when you should see a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Switching From Wellbutrin To Adderall

For treating ADHD, Adderall may be a more effective medication than Wellbutrin. If you decide to make the switch, you might notice differences in how you feel. You may experience more of a stimulant effect with Adderall, which can disrupt your sleep, says Aaeedy. Its worth noting that under no circumstances should you stop taking your Wellbutrin abruptly. Your doctor can help you wean down your Wellbutrin dosage before making the switch to Adderall. Stopping bupropion can result in withdrawal symptoms, including irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, headaches, and generalized aches and pains, research has shown.

Heart Problems Associated With Adderall And Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin has been linked with high blood pressure, sometimes to emergency levels. While this effect is most prevalent in people who already have a history of high blood pressure, it also appears more in patients using the drug to quit smoking. The FDA states, There is no clinical experience establishing the safety of Wellbutrin in patients with a recent history of myocardial infarction or unstable heart disease. Therefore, care should be exercised if it is used in these groups.

Adderall and other stimulants have long been the source of debate due to their cardiovascular health implications. Common heart-related side effects of Adderall include hypertension and elevated heart rate. One study found that 3% of otherwise healthy adults experienced adverse cardiovascular effects, including severe high blood pressure, heart palpitation, or tachycardia when using Adderall. When combined with the dangers that Wellbutrin can pose to a patients heart health, the potentially negligible cardiovascular symptoms presented by Adderall can quickly become far more life-threatening. Taking Wellbutrin and Adderall together adds significant risk of long-term heart problems and sudden death by a heart attack.

How The Intervention Might Work

Studies have demonstrated similar bioavailability for immediate, sustained and extendedrelease bupropion, but information about their efficacy and the occurrence of adverse effects is scarce. The spontaneous seizure rate reported in the general population is approximately 0.1% , whereby the incidence of a convulsion rises significantly at dosages higher than 450 mg per day, the highest recommended dose . Also, some people taking the drug have developed anxiety, some have developed headaches , and others have reported exacerbation of tic disorders . The potential increase in blood pressure is usually small and only of concern in those with marginal or high blood pressure. Bupropion shows little impact on weight and sexual function . Doserelated side effects are mediated via the catecholamines transmitters. The mechanism of idiosyncratic side effects is unknown.

Both bupropion and methylphenidate are dopamine and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors at the presynapse. However, the reuptake inhibition is less strong for bupropion, as reflected by the half maximal inhibitory concentration , which is a measure of the effectiveness of a compound.

Elon Musk is not a medical doctor. Hes not a psychiatrist or any other type of mental health professional. But on Friday, he expressed a very strong opinion about Wellbutrin, an anti-depressant medication, on Twitter. Yes, Twitter, that social media platform that he plans on buying for $44 billion, which is about $44 billion more than most people will ever have. Take a look at how Musk responded to a tweet from Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen about a different medication Adderall:

From Twitter

As you can see, Andreessen had originally tweeted, Everyone thinks our present society was caused by social media. I’m wondering whether Adderall plus ubiquitous Google searches have bigger effects. Note that Andreessen, whos not a medical doctor or other mental health professional either, didnt specifically mention Wellbutrin but instead pasted a passage that mentioned Wellbutrin without specifying from where he got that passage. Nevertheless, Musk decided to throw in a well, how about Wellbutrin type of reply: Wellbutrin is way worse than Adderall imo. It should be taken off the market. Every time that drug has come up in conversation, someone at the table has a suicide or near suicide story.

He emphasized the need to increase access to ALL depression treatments in the rest of his thread:

Does Wellbutrin Enhance Adderall

Some people wonder if combining Wellbutrin and Adderall can increase the effects of each medication. While both drugs increase the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, and both may be used to treat ADHD, theres no literature to show that Wellbutrin enhances your bodys response to Wellbutrin. In fact, experts say its a pairing you may want to avoid due to potential safety concerns.

Data Collection And Analysis

Two review authors independently screened records and extracted data using a data extraction sheet that we tested in a pilot study. We extracted all relevant data on study characteristics and results. We assessed risks of bias using the Cochrane ‘Risk of bias’ tool, and assessed the overall quality of evidence using the GRADE approach. We used a fixedeffect model to pool the results across studies.

Why Take Wellbutrin For Adhd

Although stimulants are the most effective treatment for ADHD, your doctor might prescribe a non-stimulant, second-line medication like Wellbutrin for a few reasons:

  • Effectiveness: Not everyone who takes stimulant medication finds relief from their ADHD symptoms.
  • History of medical conditions: Sometimes, an underlying medical condition makes the use of stimulant medications problematic. Such conditions include heart problems, sleep disorders, and psychiatric conditions such as substance use disorder and bipolar disorder.
  • Tolerance: Some people do not tolerate stimulant medications and experience severe side effects.

Other non-stimulant medications for ADHD include Strattera and Catapres .
