Drug Interactions Of Wellbutrin Vs Adderall

Wellbutrin may require dosage adjustment when taken with medications that are metabolized by an enzyme called CYP2B6. Drugs that are metabolized by enzyme CYP2D6 also interact with Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin can increase levels of these other drugs, including antidepressants, beta-blockers, certain antiarrhythmics, and antipsychotics.

Use caution when combining Wellbutrin with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, oral steroids, or theophylline. If the combination must be used, start the Wellbutrin at a low dose and increase gradually.

Tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil or Pamelor may increase the cardiovascular side effects of Adderall. Paxil or Prozac are SSRI antidepressants that may increase serotonin syndrome risk when taken with Adderall. SNRI antidepressants such as Effexor may also pose the same chance of serotonin syndrome when taken with Adderall. Adderall may also interact with blood pressure medicines of any category.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors , combined with either Wellbutrin or Adderall, can cause a hypertensive crisis and lead to death. MAOIs should not be used within 14 days of Wellbutrin or Adderall. Alcohol should be avoided with Wellbutrin or Adderall.

Side Effects Of Adderall

Common side effects of Adderall include:

  • Changes in sex drive or sexual performance

Similar to other medications, Adderall can produce more serious side effects. These include:

  • Heart rhythm problems

  • Raynauds syndrome, a condition where blood flow to fingers, toes, ears or nose is restricted

  • Psychosis, or hallucinations

Its possible to become dependent on Adderall or develop an addiction to the medication because of how strong the drug is and how those taking it can easily develop a tolerance. Common signs of an Adderall withdrawal are feeling tired, mentally foggy, taking the drug despite knowing its causing harm or needing larger doses to feel the effects.

Similarities Between Wellbutrin And Adderall

When it comes to Wellbutrin vs Adderall, these two medications do have some similarities, including that they both affect the brains supply of norepinephrine and dopamine.

One of the other main similarities between Wellbutrin and Adderall is that they can both be used to treat ADHD.

While Adderall is prescribed more often for ADHD treatment, its not always effective for everyone. Research has shown that 20 percent of people dont respond to stimulants as treatment for ADHD.

But because of how Wellbutrin works to increase norepinephrine, our bodys fight or flight response to anxiety triggers, it can be energizing or motivating to those with ADHD or depression.

So, your doctor may consider prescribing Wellbutrin if you cant handle the side effects of stimulants, they dont manage your ADHD symptoms or you have an underlying medical condition that could be affected by stimulants.

In small, randomized clinical trials that included over 400 adults, it was found that long-acting forms of Wellbutrin resulted in significant improvements in ADHD symptoms.

Some studies also suggest stimulants may be used as an off-label treatment for depression, as they can provide immediate alertness, energy and attention. However Adderall can cause depression if misused or taken without a prescription.

What Is An Off

Off-label treatment is the practice of prescribing a medication for a condition other than that for which the FDA originally approved it. It’s a common, legal practice. For example, Wellbutrin XL is FDA-approved to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder , and the SR form is approved for depression and smoking cessation, but clinicians often prescribe these medications off-label for ADHD.

What Can Help Treat Adhd

There are some of the factors that contribute to ADHD are stress during pregnancy, brain injury, and premature birth. However, many believe that this condition does not have a cure as such. Even, psychotherapy, social skills training, support groups, and behavior therapy can prove beneficial. Moreover, stress management methods like meditation and exercise can also be advantageous. Besides these, doctors also recommend medication which may include amphetamine-based stimulants and methylphenidate.

Moreover, stimulant medications like these are often the first line of treatment prescribed for treating the symptoms of the disease. Moreover, a vast majority of clinicians prefer stimulant medications because of their effectiveness to reduce the symptoms of the disease. That said, you might wonder about those people who respond less to stimulant medications. Secondly, what types of medicines are prescribed for those who have other co-existing conditions like depression and anxiety?

So, for such patients, doctors often use off-label medication options.

Description Of The Intervention

Most of the effective pharmacological treatments for ADHD facilitate catecholamine transmission, either as agonists or as reuptake inhibitors . They can be divided into psychostimulants and nonstimulants.

Psychostimulants

Despite the fact that psychostimulant medications are the mainstay of treatment, with a solid track record of safety and efficacy , they are either not effective, or tolerated, in approximately 30% to 50% of all adults with ADHD . Acute doserelated psychiatric side effects include nervousness, insomnia, psychosis and agitation somatic side effects include anorexia, weight loss, nausea, headaches and elevated blood pressure and heart rate . Their reinforcing or euphorigenic effects mean there is a potential for abuse and diversion . A recent Cochrane Review on the beneficial or harmful effects of methylphenidate for the treatment of ADHD in children and adolescents concluded that the magnitude of effect is uncertain, with some evidence that methylphenidate increases the risk of nonserious adverse events, such as disturbed sleep and reduced appetite, and no evidence that it increases the risk of serious adverse events .

Nonstimulants

Wellbutrin for ADHD: Usage and Effectiveness · Mango Clinic

Children with ADHD can have a short attention span and may have problems being hyperactive and impulsive. That means that they may not do well at school, may have trouble making or keeping friends, and may even have problems at home and with after-school activities.

Fortunately, treatments can help to control the symptoms of ADHD in most kids. These treatments typically include ADHD medications and behavioral strategies, which could be more formal, such as behavioral therapy with a child psychologist or counselor, or just simple steps that parents and teachers learn to help them get more organized, avoid distractions, and behave more appropriately.

The Dangers Of Combining Wellbutrin And Adderall

Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine commonly used to treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders and narcolepsy. Wellbutrin, generic name bupropion, is an antidepressant that is also used to help quit smoking. There is some evidence that, like Adderall, Wellbutrin improves attention and impulse control in specific populations, though the FDA has not yet approved its prescription for this purpose. While it might sound like Adderall and Wellbutrin are well-suited for simultaneous use, taking both drugs at once puts you at risk for a significant range of complications and can quickly lead to dangerous territory.

Does Wellbutrin Help With Anxiety

While anxiety is a potential side effect that some people may experience while taking Wellbutrin, other people may find that taking Wellbutrin for anxiety eases their symptoms. Several older studies suggest that Wellbutrin may be similarly effective in treating anxiety compared to some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors , such as Lexapro and Zoloft or Prozac.

Bupropion For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Adults

Review question

We reviewed the evidence on the effects of the drug bupropion in adults with ADHD. We also reviewed adverse effects .

Background

ADHD is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention, impulsivity and/or excessive activity, which interferes with functioning or development. Some people with ADHD only have problems with one of the behaviors, while others have a combination. Bupropion is a drug that is registered for the treatment of depression and for stopping smoking, but is also used to treat ADHD. People with ADHD are usually prescribed stimulant drugs such as methylphenidate and amphetamines. However, not everyone responds well to stimulants. Some people cannot tolerate stimulants because of side effects. Others have medical conditions such as psychiatric conditions or tic disorders that make it not possible to use stimulants. Other people may not want to use stimulants, as these are controlled substances. Nonstimulants such as bupropion are therefore sometimes used instead. Its effectiveness in treating ADHD is not yet known.

Doesn”t do much for ADHD, but I”m less depressed I’ve pretty much got a handle on how to keep CFS from dragging me down too badly, but I’m still trying to figure out how to handle my ADHD. At least the Wellbutrin keeps me from being paralyzed with depression on top of that. So, I’m a lot more functional than I was before starting to take it. Fortunately, I’m one of the lucky ones for whom it has few or no side effects. I wish it weren’t so damned expensive, though. Even the generic form costs way too much.

Heart Problems Associated With Adderall And Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin has been linked with high blood pressure, sometimes to emergency levels. While this effect is most prevalent in people who already have a history of high blood pressure, it also appears more in patients using the drug to quit smoking. The FDA states, There is no clinical experience establishing the safety of Wellbutrin in patients with a recent history of myocardial infarction or unstable heart disease. Therefore, care should be exercised if it is used in these groups.

Adderall and other stimulants have long been the source of debate due to their cardiovascular health implications. Common heart-related side effects of Adderall include hypertension and elevated heart rate. One study found that 3% of otherwise healthy adults experienced adverse cardiovascular effects, including severe high blood pressure, heart palpitation, or tachycardia when using Adderall. When combined with the dangers that Wellbutrin can pose to a patients heart health, the potentially negligible cardiovascular symptoms presented by Adderall can quickly become far more life-threatening. Taking Wellbutrin and Adderall together adds significant risk of long-term heart problems and sudden death by a heart attack.

What Drugs Interact With Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin may interact with insulin, blood thinners, and asthma medications. Wellbutrin may also interact with many medications including heart or blood pressure medications, HIV or AIDS medications, seizure medications, other antidepressants, medicines to treat a psychiatric disorder, antibiotics, antihistamines that make you sleepy, bronchodilators, birth control pills or hormone replacement estrogens, bladder or urinary medications, diet pills, stimulants, ADHD medications, oraldiabetesmedication, medicines for nausea/vomiting/motion sickness, medications to treat or prevent malaria, medicines to treat Parkinson’s disease, medication for restless leg syndrome, medication for pituitary glandtumor, medicines used to prevent organtransplantrejection, narcotics, numbing medicines, steroids, theophylline, or ulcer or irritable bowel medications.

Potential Biases In The Review Process

We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature and did not apply any restrictions by language or publication status. However, we cannot be sure that we found all relevant studies. We were not able to statistically assess the risk of publication bias due to the small number of studies, however some characteristics of this review may indicate a potential risk of publication bias. For example, four studies were sponsored by pharmaceutical companies that produce bupropion, and the lead author of one of the two publiclyfunded studies was paid by industry for research activities. Lexchin 2003 investigated whether the quality of the methods in studies funded by pharmaceutical companies differs from that in other studies and concluded that “studies sponsored by pharmaceutical companies were more likely to have outcomes favouring the sponsor than were studies with other sponsors”. One of the explanations that they provided for these results was publication bias. We are not able to confirm or refute this conclusion, as the majority of our included studies were sponsored by industry. Another indication of publication bias was the lack of studies with negative results, which may be due to sampling variance even if there is in general a positive effect. Hopewell 2009 found that studies with positive results are more likely to be published than studies with negative results.
