AUTISM appears to be one of the fastest growing developmental disabilities affecting Bahamian children, according to Marcia Newball, executive director of REACH, an autism awareness charity.
We currently guess based on the number of parents that we see here at REACH, but we dont know for sure. However, we believe that autism is the fastest-growing serious development disability in The Bahamas, Mrs Newball said at a recent cheque presentation ceremony to the charity to assist with its public education programmes.
Recognising the importance of the Autism Awareness Programme organised and managed by REACH Bahamas, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank donated $5,000 to help advance the efforts of the local autism-awareness non-profit organisation.
Managing director at CIBC FirstCaribbean, Marie Rodland-Allen, said the bank recognises the increased prevalence of autism in the Bahamian community and made the donation to help REACH in its ongoing efforts to assist families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder .
What’s Behind The Dramatic Rise In Autism Cases
The dramatic increase in the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder is largely the result of changes in how the condition is reported, Danish researchers contend.
At least in Denmark, the researchers say, most of the increase — 60 percent — can be attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria and the inclusion of out-of-hospital diagnoses.
These findings should provide some relief for parents who’ve worried that the increase in numbers was caused solely by more kids actually developing the disorder, the study authors suggested.
“That the increase until now has been left more or less unexplained has undoubtedly raised considerable concern among the public and might, in fact, have affected some parents’ health decisions regarding their child,” said lead researcher Stefan Hansen, from the section for biostatistics in the department of public health at Aarhus University.
Until now, the hypothesis that changes in the diagnostic criteria and reporting practices have had an impact on autism rates was unconfirmed, he said. Many have worried that environmental factors were solely behind the rise in the number of autism diagnoses, according to background information in the study.
In other words, the symptoms for an autism diagnosis are slightly broader today than in years past, Hansen said.

There Will Be An Even Larger Increase In 2020
The biannual announcement in 2018 of yet another increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder has practically become a new rite of spring.
At the start of the millennium, the rate of ASD reported by the US Centers for Disease Control was 1 in 150 and this rate remained steady for 2002. Then, starting in 2004, there have been increases announced every two years: 1 in 125 in 2004, 1 in 110 in 2006, 1 in 88 in 2008, 1 in 68 in 2010 and 2012.
Last week, the data for 2014 were announced, with another increase to 1 in 59. It is noteworthy that the CDC prevalence data are based on 8-year-old children, so that the 2014 data are for children born in 2006.
What in the world is going on? Why do the reported rates of autism keep rising? And, will they keep rising despite new programs designed to detect and treat it at increasingly younger ages?
Although scientists have not yet discovered what causes autism, a number of proposed causes have been disproven. For example, the popularized view that MMR vaccines cause autism is no longer a tenable “cause” and the article originally presenting the vaccines cause autism discovery by Andrew Wakefield was withdrawn under scandalous circumstances.,
Despite this, the view that vaccines cause autism persists and some point to the rise in autism as a reason to fear vaccinations. And, of course, the rate of autism keeps increasing.
Cdc Report States That Prevalence Rate Increase With 1 In 54 Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Rockville, MD, March 27, 2020 Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ; published its biennial prevalence report on the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The latest findings draw on data from two separate reports on both eight-year-old and four-year-old children, where previous findings only drew from a report on eight-year-old children.
Every year since the CDC began tracking the prevalence of autism in 2000 through the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, the numbers have consistently gone up. This year is no different. The report shows that the number of eight-year-old children diagnosed is now 1 in 54. The previous rate released in 2018 was 1 in 59. Whether increases in ASD prevalence are partly attributable to a true increase in the risk of developing ASD or solely to changes in community awareness and identification patterns is not known.;
As usual, the estimates varied from state to state from 13.1 per 1,000 children aged eight years in Colorado, to 31.4 per 1,000 children aged 8 years in New Jersey. Also consistent with previous findings is that boys are identified at higher rates than girls. Among boys aged eight years, the prevalence was 29.7 per 1,000, 4.3 times higher than the 6.9 per 1,000 prevalence among girls aged eight years.
According to the report, progress has been made toward the goal of increasing the number of children who receive their first developmental evaluation for ASD by 36 months.;

The jump in autism cases has spawned not only alarm but also debate about whether the number of children with autism could have increased that much in a relatively brief time.
“There’s a lot of controversy about that,” says Jeff Milunsky, MD, director of clinical genetics and associate director of the Center for Human Genetics at Boston University.
Two researchers who tracked the rate of autism in children born in the same area of England from 1992 to 1995 and then from 1996 to 1998 found that the rates were comparable, and concluded that the incidence of autism was stable. The study was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 2005.
But, Milunsky says, several studies have documented an increase in the U.S.
In a recent report in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, Milunsky and his colleagues point to several studies finding an increase in autism rates. In 2003, for instance, a large study conducted in Atlanta found that one in 166 to one in 250 children had autism, according to a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Another study conducted by the CDC in 14 states found an overall prevalence of one in 152, which Milunsky and others say is the generally accepted figure today.
“A kid labeled autistic today could have been labeled mentally retarded 10 years ago in the same school system,” Shattuck says. It wasn’t until 1992 that schools began to include autism as a special education classification.
Diagnostic Changes And Improvements
The Centers for Disease Control in the United States and others have long attributed the dramatic increase in Autism to better diagnosing and greater awareness. Examples of the meteoric rise in the number of children diagnosed with Autism are common, but hotly debated. For example, the number of students in the United States considered autistic has risen from about 5,200 in 1991 to more than 192,000 in 2005, according to federal education statistics.
The diagnostic criteria used to determine this prevalence were very narrow according to some researchers. At the time, Autism diagnosis was generally based on criteria similar or identical to those outlined by Kanner and Eisenberg :
A profound lack of affective contact with other people Anxiously obsessive desire for the preservation of sameness in routines and environment A fascination for objects, which are handled with skill in fine motor movements Mutism or a kind of language that does not seem intended for inter-personal communication Good cognitive potential shown in feats of memory or skills on performance tests Kanner also emphasized onset from birth or before 30 months.
Several epidemiological studies before the 1990s confirmed this level of prevalence across Europe and the U.S. For example, Ritvo et al found a prevalence of 4 in 10,000 in Utah. Somewhat higher prevalences were found by several Japanese studies.

Screening Guidelines For Autism
Continued awareness of autism has resulted in increased routine screening by pediatricians, another contributing factor to a rise in cases. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that all children be screened for ASD at ages 18 and 24 months, along with regular developmental surveillance.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by impaired social interaction, impaired verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted, repetitive behaviour. In the early 1990s the diagnosis of autism broadened to cover autism spectrum disorder , characterised by a broad range of these symptoms.
The causes of ASD are under investigation and are a source of intense popular interest. The case for some proposed causes of ASD, for example vaccines and ingestion of certain herbicides, are often significantly informed by pseudoscience.

Among environmental risk factors that have been associated with ASD are parental age, prenatal and perinatal complications, air pollution and maternal exposure to pesticides.
