Yes, the Social Security Administration has two kinds of autism disability benefits for eligible individuals, including:

Who Can Get Ssi
For your child to be approved for SSI, there are five things that must be true:
- Your family the people living in your home that are listed on the SSI application must have a limited income and limited resources, including financial benefits and things you own, based on a special SSI formula. Only certain parts of your earnings count as income.
- You can enter your income and see what SSI benefits you might be able to get with the Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool.
- Once your child turns 18 years old, only their income and resources will be considered. If they were not able to get SSI as a child because your family income was too high, they might be able to get it as an adult.
- Your child must have a physical or mental disability, or a special health care need, that significantly restricts their daily activities. Children 17 years old and younger must have what the Social Security Administration calls “marked and severe functional limitations.” At age 18, this definition changes to “an inability to do any substantial gainful activity,” such as holding a job.
- Your child’s disability must have lasted or be expected to last for at least 12 months. If your child has a life-threatening condition, you can still apply for help. Infants with certain disabilities or special health care needs can get SSI payments right away, even before they are fully approved for SSI benefits.
How Can Employers Best Work With Autistic People
Under the ADA, businesses with 15 or more employees cannot discriminate against someone with autism. These rules apply in every aspect of employment, from job applications and hiring to training and privileges and leaving the job.
Employers must also provide reasonable support to employees with autism, including any special equipment that allows them to do their job. Employers don’t have to provide accommodations that would be extremely difficult or costly, however. No matter the support the autistic person needs, they still must perform their job effectively.
Working with adults with autism can be an enriching experience for employers if they work to overcome potential challenges in the workplace.
Examples of helpful practices:
- Clarify expectations of the job: Be explicit about expectations and explain any unwritten rules.
- Provide training and monitoring: Informal, clear and well-structured training is invaluable.
- Ensure instructions are concise and specific: Offer clear instructions and don’t assume an autistic person can infer.
- Ensure the work environment is well-structured: People may appreciate help to prioritize and organize tasks and set break times. Let the person know in advance of any changes.
- Provide direct feedback: Be sensitive but honest, constructive and consistent. Give positive feedback when appropriate.

How Do Doctors Make A Diagnosis Of Autism
When a doctor diagnoses autism, there are no blood tests or imaging studies they can use. Instead, they have to observe the adult or child with autism to see if their behavior and development meets the diagnostic guidelines of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
Doctors look for what’s known as the autism triad when they diagnose someone. If someone has difficulty with social interactions, verbal and non-verbal communication and demonstrates rigid thoughts and repetitive behaviors, an autism spectrum diagnosis is likely.

Ssa Income Limits For Disability Benefits
The 2015 monthly income limit for individual SSI claimants is $733. This number is called the Federal Benefit Rate, or FBR. The FBR represents not only the maximum earnings per month but also the maximum payment a claimant can receive each month. In other words, you can neither earn nor receive more than $733 per month. The FBR for couples is higher: $1,100 per month.
If you earn more than the FBR, dont panic. You could still potentially qualify, because some of your earnings dont count toward the FBR. The SSA uses a complex formula to determine how much of your income is countable, and certain portions of your income and earnings are excluded. For example, the SSA does not count any of the following:
- The first $20 of your monthly income.
- Income tax refunds.
- Loans that youre responsible for repaying.
- Need-based assistance you receive from the state of Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

Employment And Support Allowance
Employment and Support Allowance is the benefit for people who cannot work or who have a limited ability to work due to having a disability or health condition. There are two types of Employment and Support Allowance:
- contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance is not means-tested and is paid to people who have paid enough National Insurance contributions to qualify, or who qualified under the old âyouthâ rules which have since been abolished for new claims. This is now known as New Style Employment and Support Allowance for new claims
- income-based Employment and Support Allowance is means-tested and is paid to people whose income and savings are low enough to qualify. Only your income and savings, and those of a partner who you live with, are counted. For example, if you live with a friend or with your parents, their income and savings are not counted.
You can only make a new claim for income-based Employment and Support Allowance if you are getting a severe disability premium on another pre-Universal Credit means-tested benefit.

If you are a teacher or other state employee in North Carolina, and a member of the Teachers and State Employees Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program, the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina provides monthly replacement income to you in the form of short-term, extended short-term and long-term disability benefits if you become disabled while you are a permanent employee.

How Much You Can Expect To Receive
Your CDB payments are calculated using the following information:
- number of eligible children
Every July, your CDB payments are recalculated based on your AFNI from the previous year.
For example, July 2021 to June 2022 payments are based on your income from your 2020 tax return and July 2020 to June 2021 payments are based on your income from your 2019 tax return.
For the period of July 2021 to June 2022, you could get up to $2,915 for each child who is eligible for the DTC.
The benefit starts being reduced when the adjusted family net income is greater than $69,395. The reduction is calculated as follows:
